Michael Fenton, accountant/sports administrator: b July 5, 1935 d August 5, 2020Speak to anyone people who knew Michael Fenton well and they tell you in reverent tones about his impact on their lives - whether through his generosity, community deeds or sanguine advice. Michael represented Southland as a swimmer for five years, and also starred in the provincial water polo team. He was accountant or auditor for numerous Southland firms; including the Tourist Hotel Corporation’s accounts for Te Anau Hotel, Milford Hotel and Milford Track, and also had a 20-year association with Southland’s huge Mt Linton Station. “Michael was well known within the business community through his lengthy involvement in client affairs,” said former colleague John Ward. Footnote: As an accountant Michael Fenton may have been a stickler for accuracy, but he would have chuckled loudly at a misprint on his funeral sheet: “A reading from the Profit Isaiah”
