In an unprecedented letter to U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the new head of press freedom for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Harlem Desir, urged President Trump to stop attacking U.S. journalists. It’s the first time the OSCE has issued such a rebuke to a sitting U.S. president. Desir, appointed to head the OSCE’s press freedom office in July after serving as French Minister of State for European Affairs, sent the letter to Tillerson last month. Trump is attacking the press at the very moment journalists need to be defended, he said. “Press freedom is key to building security and public confidence in nation states,” he said.
