No happy birthday for lorry driver, jailed a week for trying to bribe MACC officer

KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver is set to celebrate his 45th birthday behind bars today when he was sentenced to a week in prison and fined RM10,000 in default eight months jail for offering a bribe last year. Judge Madihah Harullah meted out the sentence against How Ah Lai after he pleaded guilty to offering a RM300 bribe to a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer on February 2016. The offence was allegedly committed between 1pm and 1.30pm at government reserve land in Taman Selatan, Presint 20, Putrajaya on Feb 11. However, How’s lawyer Datuk Rajpal Singh, in pleading for a lenience sentence, said his client was his family's sole breadwinner. Today is also his birthday."
