The Cougars also increased their winning streak against East Carolina (9-12, 3-5) to nine games. Houston was 20 of 32 from the free-throw line and East Carolina was 17 of 26. Gardner kept East Carolina in the game by halftime, scoring 16 points in the first half on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Houston kept a double-digit lead until East Carolina cut the lead to 68-59 with 49 seconds left on a free throw by Tristen Newton.
