National Arts Centre lands record $5M donation for unique fund to spur ambitious works

OTTAWA — The National Arts Centre has landed the largest private donation in its history for a unique fund it will administer to create ambitious new works from artists across the country. Those behind the campaign hope it will fund work that finds an international audience. War Horse was produced in 2007 by Britain’s National Theatre and became an international sensation. That the U.K.’s National Theatre had its own creation fund was not lost on Asper, Herrndorf, Watson and others at Canada’s National Arts Centre. The $5-million gift marks the single largest donation Asper has made to an arts organization.
