Last week, Quebec’s National Assembly passed Bill 62, a law that prevents Quebecers from receiving or providing various public services if their face is covered. But this time, with Bill 62 popular in Quebec, there are opportunistic reasons for the Liberals to not get involved, particularly since the party will be relying heavily on Quebeckers’ support in the next election. It would unnecessarily aggravate federal provincial relations to seek a court reference on Bill 62Unlike Harper’s ban on face-coverings, which was a federal initiative, Bill 62 is a provincial law. A constitutional challenge to Bill 62 is almost certainly forthcoming. Far better that a court rule on Bill 62 based on how it impacts the rights of a real person.
