Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) is planning to expand its annual capacity to 52 million passengers by 2020, a report released by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said. The airport handled around 48.50 million passengers in the last fiscal. However, 41.67 million passengers travelled during the period, against the management estimates of touching the 40 million mark only in 2018-19. MIAL has a slew of plans for expansion, including upgrading the runway capacity to 48 aircraft movement per hour during peak hours. MIAL sources said with the expansion reaching saturation level and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport still some years away, capacity expansion from Mumbai is going to be a tough task.
