In an unprecedented development, the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) remained open on Sunday and will be functional on Ganesh Chaturthi as well. According to transport officials, there is a huge backlog of vehicles waiting for registration and fitness inspection certificates since August. Most RTOs in the state do not have such long tracks and therefore had stopped registration as well as certifying fitness of the vehicles. But now, to clear the waiting list, the department will be working on holidays also. "All the Inspector Motor Vehicles (the personnel who check the vehicles for fitness) were present and the RTOs in Borivli, Andheri and Wadala cleared a lot of rickshaws.
