The Head of the Liberian Cancer Society, Dr. Dawn Barnes, has revealed that more young women are suffering from Esophageal Cancer in Liberia. Esophageal Cancer is cancer that occurs in the esophagus, and is caused by consuming alcohol, smoking, having a reflux disorder, such as gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), being overweight, and not eating enough fruits and vegetables. Symptoms of Esophageal Cancer are difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), chest pain, pressure or burning, worsening indigestion or heartburn, coughing or hoarseness. Barnes said Esophageal Cancer is the number two most common cancer in women between ages 16-44, while women in the same age group have other cancers, especially breast cancer, but added that Esophageal Cancer is the highest in women of all ages in Liberia.
