The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Port Saunders and Flower's Cove say they've responded to several moose-vehicle accidents and near misses over the past number of weeks. However, due to the volume of accidents and reports of near misses, the RCMP want to remind the public that moose accidents can be very serious. Dusk and dawn are the most common times for moose to be alongside the road. Drivers should reduce speeds, especially at night, pay extra attention to the edges of roads, and ensure car headlights are in good working order to help reduce the risk of collisions. Drivers are also reminded to keep safe driving distances between cars in case a quick stop is needed to avoid hitting a moose.
