“I’m on a wait list for a psychiatrist, but I’m getting worse each day. I came to the emergency department because I don’t know what else to do.”I hear this every day in my work as a staff psychiatrist at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Our analyses show that we continue to fall short in providing timely access to mental health care to those who need it. Our most recent study, published Monday in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, looked at the characteristics of all clinically active Ontario psychiatrists between 2003 and 2013: who they are, and where and how they practise. Despite a 17 per cent increase in the number of practising psychiatrists in this time frame, and increases in the number of patients seen, demand for services continues to outpace supply.
