When Weir came to the 18th hole tied with Len Mattiace, he needed a par to force a sudden-death playoff. I went out to the press stand overlooking the 18th green — best press viewing spot in sports, I used to say — and watched Weir hit a good drive but a short approach. I was proud of Weir when he knocked in that par, forcing the playoff. It was a long way to the press room, through the parking lot, and during my journey, a large black SUV pulled up beside me and offered me a ride. I hopped in and found myself sitting next to Weir, who was being driven to the press room.
