May long weekend bookings in Spain exceed pre-pandemic levels by 10 per cent

May long weekend bookings in Spain exceed pre-pandemic levels by 10 per centForeign tourists are responsible for almost 40% of reservations in Spain this holiday weekendAfter a bumper Easter week that came within a hair’s breadth of pre-pandemic visitor levels , Spain is gearing up for a hugely successful May bank holiday weekend, with accommodation reservations already 10% higher than the same period in 2019. The high rate of bookings has been experienced despite the fact that May Day isn’t even a holiday in all regions in Spain, and tourism company Destinia has indicated that the break is marked by “last minute” reservations, quite possibly boosted by the good weather forecast for the weekend after weeks of rain. Although British tourists have retaken the top spot for Spanish visitors in general, the May bridge has seen a massive increase in the number of French holidaymakers (+106%), followed by the English, Bulgarians and Germans. The upsurge in visitors is in spite of the fact that the average price per night is 13% higher this year than during the same weekend in 2019, and the top five destinations for this May holiday are Salou, Madrid, Cambrils, Benidorm and Torremolinos.
