A 30-year-old man sleeping in his vehicle with a knife by his pillow and a hatchet above a sun visor told police he had the weapons ''for protection''. Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said police located the man sleeping in a vehicle parked at the Queenstown Gardens and when they approached they noticed a hunting knife was by his pillow. A further search of the car unearthed the hatchet. "When asked for an explanation he stated that they were for protection.'' The man, believed to have relocated to Queenstown from the North Island, was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and is expected to appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.
