A man in Compton was shot and killed by SWAT officers early Thursday during a tense search for a carjacking suspect who had opened fired on sheriff’s deputies during a traffic stop, authorities said. Sheriff’s deputies tried to stop a stolen vehicle near 138th Street and Alameda Avenue around 2 a.m., but it sped away, sheriff’s Capt. The team responded to the 800 block of West Stockwell Street and fired on him, killing him, Katz said. It remains unclear whether the dead man was the carjacking suspect, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina. The fatal shooting occurred near the 800 block of West Stockwell Street.
