In one of the most poignant moments of the Democratic National Convention, thus far, the mother of a gay man killed in the June 12 mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, made a tearful onstage plea for gun reform. “I’m glad common sense gun policy was in place the day Christopher was born, but where was that common sense the day he died?”Drew Leinonen had reportedly been planning to marry his boyfriend, Juan Ramon Guerrero, who was also killed in the Orlando shooting. Christine Leinonen said she was inspired to speak at the convention Wednesday because her son, Christopher “Drew” Leinonen, had been a “big supporter” of Hillary Clinton. And before proclaiming her support for Clinton, Leinonen pointed out how her son’s paternal grandparents met in a Japanese internment camp.
