Magnitude 4.4 earthquake quake jolts WellingtonGEONET The earthquake happened 25km southeast of Wellington. GeoNet data shows the magnitude 4.4 earthquake was at a depth of 23 kilometres, 25km southeast of the capital. Bit of a shaky night in Wellington, we have had over 2000 felt reports for that 'moderate' shake. A moderate earthquake rumbled Wellington just after 9pm on Tuesday. Police and fire had no reports of damage from the quake, which was felt as far north as Palmerston North and as far south as Picton.
