Liberals give up complete control on electoral reform committee in major win for NDP

The move comes after weeks of criticism that the Liberals were “stacking the deck” on electoral reform, keeping a majority on the committee and almost complete control over the ultimate recommendations. OTTAWA—The Liberals have agreed to give up their complete control over the process to recommend a new electoral system. Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef will announce this morning that all opposition parties will have a vote on the electoral reform committee, meaning the Liberals will need at least one other major party to support their proposals. Maryam Monsef, Minister of Democratic Institutions says the government will support an NDP motion that would see the committee’s membership reflect each party’s share of the popular vote in the last election. That was the structure proposed by the third-place New Democrats, who now essentially hold the balance of power on the committee.
