The HK$2 ride scheme for the elderly was introduced in 2012, with the number of eligible people aged 65 or above reaching 1.32 million in 2019. Lawmakers across the political spectrum are concerned about the government’s decision on whether to put its plan to extend a HK$2 travel scheme to those aged between 60 and 64 on hold. Sources say the government is considering a deferral of the plan considering the current economic situation. Democratic Party lawmaker Wu Chi-wai said the move to lower the age threshold of the scheme has been supported by lawmakers from across the political divide. In January, Carrie Lam announced the lowering of the age threshold of city residents from 65 to 60 for using public transport for just HK$2 per ride.
