Five people were on Wednesday evening killed when a matatu they were travelling in veered off the road and plunged into a dry river bed on Wote-Makindu road, near Kavumbu trading centre. "Four people died on the spot and the fifth one died as he was rushed for medication," Mr Osongo told Nation on phone. Nine passengers sustained injuries, some of them critical, and were rushed to Makueni County Referral Hospital in Wote Town. Survivors who spoke to Nation.co.ke cited speeding as the vehicle approached a bridge on Miseke River on its way to Makindu Town. Area police boss Benjamin Osongo, who confirmed the accident, said that the driver of the 14-seater matatu had lost control of the vehicle as he descended a hill near the bridge.
