Arnold Palmer was unquestionably the good — a classy, courteous, gentlemanly figure of great drive and accomplishment. Donald Trump is an ugly blot on the national landscape, a base creature belched up from the crassest levels of popular culture. If Trump or Clinton were to disappear from the scene tomorrow, on the other hand, it’s doubtful many would mourn. Compare Palmer to Clinton or Trump and it suggests the U.S. has gone off the rails somewhere. Presidents in Palmer’s time were figures like Roosevelt, Truman or Dwight D. Eisenhower, a friend and sometimes golf partner.
