Labour backed Britain’s membership in the European Union, but many MPs felt Corbyn’s support for it had been half-hearted and ineffective. “The extraordinary behaviour of Labour MPs has achieved nothing beyond diverting attention from a Tory government in crisis,” complained Len McCluskey, head of the giant Unite trade union. A vote on his leadership among Labour MPs went 172-40 against him. Like Labour, they opened their most recent leadership vote to anyone willing to pay. He now finds himself at the head of a caucus that has made abundantly clear it can’t stand him.
