A career diplomat, Hossain is currently serving as the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Australia. A 1986-batch BCS Foreign Affairs Cadre officer, Hossain, earlier, served as Dhaka's envoy to Thailand from 2010-2014 and permanent representative of Bangladesh to the UNESCAP in Bangkok. He served in Bangladesh missions in China, Switzerland, India and US in different capacities during his long career. He studied accounting at Dhaka University and later International Relations and Diplomacy from the International Institute of Public Administration (IIAP), Paris.
