As COVID cases plummet in the rest of the province, the remote northeastern First Nation of Kashechewan has seen a troubling surge in the disease. As of Tuesday, there are 232 active cases in the community of 1,800 along the James Bay coast. COVID-19 has “really exploded” in Kashechewan, added Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus. “It’s a really, really frightening situation.”The First Nation, currently in a state of emergency, is also vulnerable because it does not have a hospital. The extra contagious Alpha (formerly known as the U.K.) variant has been confirmed in Kashechewan and other First Nations communities.
