KPLC loses Sh19bn to vandalism in five years, says offi cial

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company has lost Sh19 billion in five years, because it had to replace and repair vandalised transformers countrywide. “Aluminium conductors along overhead power lines and the copper earth wire – compromising system safety – are commonly vandalised,” Kigen said. Transformers, copper windings and transformer oil and stay wires supporting power structures are also vandalised resulting in the collapse of power lines. Kenya Power has more than 700 sites countrywide. Acting security manager Geoffrey Kigen on Tuesday said 3,168 transformers have been vandalised since 2011.
