Playing partner Ernie Els called Mickelson's performance "a great, great round" and that was probably an understatement. Someone definitely not troubled by either the front or the back nine on the opening day was Phil Mickelson. In the opening round of the 145th Open on Thursday, the wind was hardly blowing, but despite the benign conditions the back nine still proved a real handful. His triple bogey at the hole derailed what had been a terrific round up to that point. On Thursday, with Monty suffering a double bogey at the opening hole courtesy of a greenside bunker, it looked potentially embarrassing for the local boy.
