Invercargill city councillors have debated whether or not to spend money on the historic Stead St Wharf, but no decisions have been made. A design to construct a viewing platform on top of the existing structure, and strengthen the wharf to hold the viewing platform, was estimated to cost $720,000. However, council staff recommended the wharf remained closed to public access by installing permanent fencing and landscaping to enhance the site. Cr Karen Arnold said she wasn't supporting the recommendation of closing the wharf and putting in permanent fencing. "You [council staff] have done the investigation on the development of the viewing platform, it's something I would really support."
