The Taranaki roads and waters have the ability to produce Olympic gold, international triathlete coach Jamie Turner says. Turner, who brings a squad to Taranaki most years and trained 2016 Olympic gold medallist Gwen Jorgensen, said coming home to train was always something he enjoyed. There's fantastic swimming facilities at the Todd Energy Aquatic Centre outdoor pool and city beach and the rural riding on Taranaki roads was great, he said. "This is an Olympic gold medallist environment." Someone who hadn't quite mastered Taranaki's beaches is Australian athlete and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Ashleigh Gentle.
