The instant talaq bill was moved in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday amid sparring between the BJP and Congress-led Opposition over sending it to a select committee, a step that the government opposed on the grounds that it was a delaying tactic. The Opposition insisted that the proposed legislation was "faulty" and various stakeholders should be consulted before its passage.The bill is likely to be sent to a select panel on Thursday after putting the resolution moved by the Opposition to vote. Congress has claimed that 17 parties — including AIADMK , BJD, TMC and NDA ally TDP — are in favour of sending it to the panel. He said the Opposition had not informed the government a day before about the resolution and that the members of the proposed panel were chosen unilaterally by the Opposition. Jaitley said Congress was following "double standards" as it had supported the bill in the Lok Sabha.
