In 2020, for instance, coal consumption dropped by around 18 percent whereas total energy consumption fell by around eight percent. While China has begun to reduce its dependence on coal, it still accounts for the largest share of coal consumption among all nations. Simultaneously, coal consumption has remained relatively stable at just under 40 percent of primary energy consumption among non-OECD nations (see Table 2).
