Dame Hilary said she would now devote herself to theatre and short stories, confessing that to embark on another epic historical project would kill her. The author, who is the favourite to win an unprecedented third Booker prize this year with the concluding part of her Tudor trilogy centring on Cromwell and Henry VIII, said she hoped her fans would stop sending her ideas for a new historical fiction novel. “It’s lovely that people have the appetite for it but considering the pace at which I proceed, I would like some life before it’s too late,” she told the Edinburgh International Book Festival.
