When he tried to con the referee into awarding a penalty for the All Blacks against Wales, pretending to have been pushed to the ground, it coincided with the staging of the Miss World contest. The hapless New Zealand entrant was duly depicted as having “taken a dive” out of the competition. However, at Cardiff Arms Park that day in 1978 the antics in the lineout of Haden and his team-mate Frank Oliver brought about a penalty for the All Blacks in the final minutes, which was converted to give them a 13-12 victory.
