Hundreds of teachers were paid less than the minimum wage this year, the Ministry of Education has confirmed. The Ministry initially said a "small number" of teachers had been paid below the minimum wage after it was increased to $17.70 per hour on April 1. Figures released under the Official Information Act now show 460 fulltime primary school teachers were being paid less than the minimum wage as at April 3. "It's absolutely abhorrent that teachers are being paid less than the minimum wage," she said. A spokeswoman said while it was not acceptable that any teacher was paid below the minimum wage, there were 60,634 teachers nationwide, excluding day relief teachers, of which the 460 impacted was 0.7%.
