SANAA, Yemen (TBEN) — A court led by Yemen’s Iranian-backed rebels on Sunday upheld a five-year prison sentence against a female actor and one of her companions who were convicted of committing an indecent act and possessing drugs, her lawyer said. The case reflected the widespread repression of the Houthis and crackdown on women in their controlled areas in war-torn Yemen. The other two were sentenced to one and three years in prison respectively. The Appeals Court in the Houthi-occupied capital of Sanaa upheld the sentences against al-Hammadi and Yousra al-Nashri, who were also sentenced to five years in prison, said lawyer Khalid al-Kamal, who represents all four women. A Saudi-led coalition went to war in March 2015 to try to bring the government back to power.
