Hello Destroyer ruminates on our thirst for violence in hockey — until it all goes wrong

There is only one time in Hello Destroyer, Kevan Funk’s terse and devastating feature film debut, that our main character manages to explain himself. His teammate, another rookie on the Prince George Warriors hockey team, listens, but he doesn’t really understand. He makes a joke about being afraid of the dark, but even that comes after he admits he doesn’t really know what Tyson is talking about. Tyson is a hockey player, from what we see of him on the ice, a rough and tumble one. But it’s the silence Tyson meets that does far more damage than anything he manages with his fists or shoulders.
