Figures published today show that 1.4 million passengers travelled through the hub in August – traditionally the busiest month of the year – compared with about 7.7 million at the same point in 2019. Frankfurt in Germany now carries more passengers, knocking Heathrow off the position it has held for more than a decade. Heathrow said the figures underlined the scale of the effect coronavirus and the government’s handling of the crisis had had on British aviation.
