Harvey’s floodwaters mix a foul brew of sewage and chemicals, puts drinking water at risk

More than 160 systems issued notices advising people to boil water before drinking it, and 50 were shut down. A week after Hurricane Harvey hit Southern Texas, residents are beginning the long process of recovering from the storm. The devastating rain from Hurricane Harvey put thousands of animals at risk of drowning, but cowpokes in helicopters are helping drive them to higher ground. “Precautions should be taken by anyone involved in cleanup activities or any others who may be exposed to floodwaters,” said a statement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state environmental quality commission. Ironically, Hurricane Harvey may have done the environment at least one favour by churning the Gulf’s waters and sending an influx of oxygen from the surface to the depths.
