HSE uneasy about restarting record-sharing system between hospitals

The HSE remains “very nervous” about switching on its patient information system to allow hospitals to share important records after the crippling cyber attack, a top health official has said. Progress has been made in restoring the HSE’s system to capture, store and share radiology, cardiology and other diagnostic images within specific hospitals and their laboratories. By the end of this week, there will be just six of 48 hospitals that have not restored this system. However, the bigger challenge facing the HSE is opening up firewalls within the IT system to allow information to flow out of hospitals into other hospitals, to GPs or other services. The biggest risk in the community was in the mental health services where there is still no access to patient records.
