HNEC welcomes HoR's move to fill vacancies in its Board

The High National Elections Commission (HNEC) welcomed the House of Representatives’ (HoR) procedures to fill the vacant seats on the HNEC's Board, adding in a statement responding to the High Council of State’s rejection of the HoR's move, that the process of filling vacancies is in accordance with the law establishing the HNEC in 2013 and has no connection to the political agreement, which some parties invoke to serve their own agendas. The HNEC said that the statement does not include any demands for the continuation of the current leadership of the institution, but rather presents facts that must be clarified amid campaigns questioning its independence and integrity and attempts to undermine its credibility. It called on "elites and political activists who have joined what it described as a campaign of doubt” to exercise accuracy in conveying facts and to review all details related to the legislation and laws governing its work. Meanwhile, the High Council of State expressed in a statement its rejection of the HoR's vote to fill the vacant seats on the HNEC, describing the move as “unilateral” and marred by “procedural and legal flaws.”The High Council of State reaffirmed its adherence to what was agreed upon between the committees of the two councils, which stipulates replacing the entire HNEC Board to ensure its independence and strengthen confidence in the electoral process. The High Council of State considered that any unilateral step affecting the electoral process constitutes a breach of political consensus, undermines the foundations of partnership between the two councils, and contributes to further division and confusion in the political landscape.
