This is under the new mining Act 2016 assented to by President Uhuru Kenyatta on May 6. Mining Cabinet secretary Dan Kazungu said the new law recognises the small or artisanal miners, under Section 92-100. “I want to mainstream Kenyans in the mining sector,” Kazungu said. The government is targeting to incorporate small-scale miners in the country’s mineral production and exports as it seeks to grow the mining sector’s earnings tenfold by 2030. Artisanal miners mainly comprise individuals, groups, families or cooperatives with minimal or no mechanisation, often in the informal (illegal) sector of the market.
