Government committee hears women's sport need funds 'now'

It was agreed by the committee, under the proposal of Sinn Féin TD Imelda Munster, to write to the Department of Sport to request the establishment of a task force that would look at all aspects of funding for female sport. “On a per-player basis, males received an average of €1,282 each, compared to €424 invested for each female,” she pointed out. O’Connor said that equality could not come quickly enough when asked about a time-frame for the gap to be closed. “A quick turnaround because players are as committed now as they will be next year, so the sooner the better. They need to be recompensed to get equality for our players.”O’Rourke highlighted the percentage reduction in State funding for the LGFA in 13 years despite a 32pc rise in membership, pointing out that the state contributed 24pc in 2007 compared to nine per cent now.
