Prices should be slashed by up to £12 a month for low-income households, according to the Fabian Society. Figures show 13% of households do not use the internet, 23% either do not use the internet or only use a smartphone, and 47% do not use the internet with a computer at home. “In the context of a second coronavirus lockdown in England, politicians should commit to affordable access to digital connections for all.”His report calls for a “British Broadband Discount” scheme, modelled on the Warm Home Discount for energy bills. The think tank said six million homes could be eligible if the discount was offered to families receiving Pension Credit or Universal Credit, or benefits which were in place before UC. “Depending on the resources available it could be offered to all households receiving out-of-work benefits, or a targeted scheme could be introduced for low-income families with children,” says the study.
