In new release news that isn’t Deadpool 2, Paramount/Viacom Inc.’s Book Club pulled an okay $4.73 million on its first day of release. The Focus Features release opened in 346 theaters yesterday, which is a lot for a documentary, and it earned $175,000 for the trouble. We should be looking at a $585k Fri-Sun weekend, which would give the doc a poor $1.7k per-theater average. Paul Schrader’s acclaimed First Reformed, starring Ethan Hawke and Amanda Seyfried, opened in four theaters yesterday courtesy of A24. The grim drama earned around $31,000 on Friday for a likely $105k Fri-Sun weekend and promising $25k per-theater average.
