French Defence Minister Sylvie Goulard announced her resignation on Tuesday over a fake jobs scandal that has hit her small centrist MoDem party, which has allied itself with President Emmanuel Macron’s party. Goulard was named to the defence job only a month ago following Macron’s election to the presidency. Bayrou, whom Macron named justice minister as a reward for his support, last week dismissed the claims, saying there had “never been” fake jobs among his party’s European Parliament staff. Macron has already used the post-election period to fine tune his government and remove a scandal-hit minister. Ferrand, who was a minister with responsibility for territorial cohesion, has accepted to make the switch.
