Bangladesh Bank has asked all commercial banks in the country to keep their respective branches open on the coming weekend (June 23 and 24) to facilitate payment of wages for the garment workers. The central bank’s Department of Off-site Supervision (DOS) issued a circular on Tuesday June 20 asking all the CEOs of the commercial banks to keep their branches open from 9:30am to 12:00pm on Friday and 9:30am to 4:00pm on Saturday. The circular stated, “Branches of any Authorised Dealer (AD) bank located in apparel industry areas will remain open on next Friday and Saturday to assist in the payment of garments workers wages before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr”. In another circular, the central bank also asked any remittance service related AD banks to keep their branches open on Saturday.
