It takes a huge amount of restraint to make a film about automaker/financier John DeLorean and not include even a single frame from Back to the Future until the last 10 minutes. But the story of its inventor (John Z. DeLorean, not Dr. Emmett L. Brown) is worth its own motion picture. A shot in Framing John DeLorean shows a Hollywood trade paper listing seven projects in development, including the fan-financed Back to the DeLorean, Brett Ratner’s Untitled DeLorean Project and an Untitled DeLorean Thriller. Framing John DeLorean uses a mix of styles to tell the story of the Detroit-born car executive, who was forced out of General Motors and then tried to beat the big boys at their own game. Then there’s DeLorean’s arrest in 1982, after a meeting with drug dealers turned out to be an FBI sting.
