Wild Nights With Emily is a far more ribald affair than other Emily Dickinson biopics

– it’s a shame none of the studios has thought to create a literary shared universe where Arthur Conan Doyle might rub shoulders (and solve crimes!) Wild Nights with Emily, about 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson, gets its release barely a year after Cynthia Nixon played her in Terence Davies’ A Quiet Passion, which favoured quiet over passion. As the new title suggests, this one is a far more ribald affair, focusing closely on the possible lesbian relationship between Dickinson and her brother’s wife, Susan (Susan Ziegler). “Or what if Mabel dresses as Emily and looks at herself in the mirror?”Todd was a real history-wrecker. She has cleverly sprinkled her tale with readings of Dickinson’s work by the poet and others, often serious but straying into whimsy as well.
