The retrenchment of more than 3,000 Karuturi flower farm workers has seen crime, prostitution and cases of children dropping out of school rise in South Lake Naivasha area. Akinyi said young girls were also involved in the trade, bringing to fore the sad situation the former workers were undergoing. Maureen Akinyi, one of the affected workers, said they have suffered a lot since the company was put under receivership. Elizabeth Odhiambo, a community leader, said majority of the former workers do not know their future - forcing some to engage in prostitution. "This is a very sad situation because we are slowly turning South Lake region in Naivasha into a prostitution hub and we need government's assistance to help fight this menace," she said.
