American-based New Zealand conductor Gemma New has come home for a series of concerts. New was lucky to be taken under the wing of Christchurch Symphony Orchestra chief conductor Tom Wood, who taught her everything he knew. New is the music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada, music director of the St Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra, principal guest conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and for four years has been resident conductor of the St Louis Symphony Orchestra. New played with the DSO as a young violinist and remembers visiting the city with the Christchurch Youth Orchestra.
