February is unusually busy month for Laconia firefighters

By MICHAEL KITCH, LACONIA DAILY SUNLACONIA — Last month the Fire Department responded to 412 emergency calls — an average of 15 calls per day — the most during any February in its history and the first time it has ever answered more than 400 calls during a winter month. Fire Chief Ken Erickson said that the call volume this February was a third higher than the average of 309 calls for the month. At the same time, the 762 calls since the beginning of the year exceeds the average for the same period during the prior three years by 13 percent. About a fifth of all calls this year occurred between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. The department responded to 11 structure fires in January and February, two of them considered serious.
